On Friday, John and I went to Nurnberg (or Neremberg as Americans spell it), Germany. It was a three hour drive. John was born there when his parents were stationed near there, and hadn't been back since. It was a really fun and beautiful city.
Stadtbefestigung. Nuremberg was built around the historic castle in 1050, and the walls that still surround the city served as fortifications for the royal family and the citizens of the city.
Where we ate lunch. After we had ordered our food, she brought us a bread basket. We hungrily dug in. When we asked for water, she asked if we wanted little gas or big gas. I was really confused. John said no gas (carbonation). Germans aren't big water drinkers. The food was really expensive. John got 6 sausage links (like breakfast sausage size) and potato salad, and I got a very small bowl of potato soup and the total was $15 something euro. Then she was standing there with the receipt, looking into the bread basket she had given us. She said, "Two pretzels, and a roll, is that what you had?" At first we didn't know what she meant. Then we realized that she was charging us for each piece of bread we ate! It was SO weird! You can't give someone food, act like it's complimentary, and then charge them for it! So the total went up to almost $18 euro. Wow.
Lots of shopping. We went to H&M and a fun Christmas store. Well, fun for me. John stood by the door.
Albrecht Dürer Statue. This statue is dedicated to the famous German artist who once called the city home.
I think this is The Burg Castle. Built by Emperor Heinrich III in 1050, this dark ages castle proves the centerpiece of the city and the starting point of many tours of the inner walls. Sweeping views of houses and restaurants, shops, and squares are afforded from the top of the castle. The Burg Castle served as a site for every German emperor between the city's inception and the mid 16th century.
